How DTF printing works (and why we love it)
Print & Press team October 4, 2026

Direct-to-film printing gives you unlimited colours on any garment, with a soft, durable finish. Here is how it works and how to care for it.
DTF stands for direct-to-film. It is the print method we use for most custom t-shirts at Print & Press, and it solves a lot of the old problems with heat transfers and screen printing.
How it works
- Your artwork is printed in full colour onto a special film.
- A flexible adhesive is applied to the print.
- The film is pressed onto the garment with a heat press.
- The film is peeled away, leaving only the ink behind.
Why we like it
- Unlimited colours at no extra cost. A one-colour logo and a full-colour photo cost the same.
- Works on any colour, including black and dark garments.
- Soft, no-feel finish that bends with the fabric instead of sitting stiff on top.
- Durable through regular washing when you follow care instructions.
How to care for a DTF shirt
Turn the shirt inside out, wash in cold water, and hang dry or tumble on low. Avoid ironing directly on the print.
When DTF is not the right fit
For large bulk runs of a single colour, screen printing can be cheaper per shirt. For premium stitched logos, embroidery is the way to go. Tell us your project and we will recommend the best method.
